Photographing the Eucharist at a Catholic Wedding Mass
The reception of the Eucharist is one of the most significant moments of a Catholic wedding Mass. For the bride and groom, it is the first time they receive the Eucharist together as husband and wife.
It is also a moment that a wedding photographer can very easily miss.
The Eucharist at a Catholic Wedding
In a Catholic wedding Mass, the couple's exchange of vows and rings is not the end of the celebration. The Mass continues, culminating in the reception of Holy Communion.
For a Catholic couple, receiving the Eucharist together as husband and wife has a particular significance. It is not simply another part of the ceremony to photograph. It is a deeply important moment of prayer and worship.
For that reason, it deserves the same care and attention as the other important moments of the wedding Mass.
Why a Catholic Wedding Photographer Needs to Know This
A photographer who is unfamiliar with the structure of a Catholic Mass may understandably think that the most important parts of the wedding are finished once the rings have been exchanged and the vows have been made.
But this can mean that they are less attentive during the later stages of the Mass.
The photographer might be reviewing photographs, changing position, preparing for the next part of the day or simply assuming that the ceremony is almost over.
Meanwhile, one of the most significant moments of the Catholic wedding is taking place.
The priest comes to the couple as they kneel, and they receive the Eucharist together for the first time as husband and wife.
It is a moment worth being ready for.
Photographing Holy Communion Discreetly
Photographing the Eucharist requires a different approach from photographing many other parts of a wedding.
The photographer should not become a distraction.
There is no need to move around unnecessarily, get close to the couple or draw attention to the camera. A good position can usually be found to the side, allowing the moment to be documented while preserving the atmosphere of prayer and reverence.
For me, this is an important part of Catholic wedding photography: being present without being intrusive.
The photograph should serve as a record of what happened, without getting in the way of what is happening.
Tell Your Wedding Photographer
If you are planning a Catholic wedding, it is worth discussing the Mass with your photographer before the wedding day.
Tell them about the parts of the Mass that are particularly important to you and make sure they understand that you want the reception of the Eucharist photographed.
Even better, choose a photographer who already understands the structure and significance of a Catholic wedding Mass.
You should not have to spend your wedding day wondering whether your photographer knows what is happening.
Choosing a Catholic Wedding Photographer
Catholic weddings have moments that can be unfamiliar to photographers who mainly photograph civil ceremonies or non-religious weddings.
Understanding the Mass means knowing when the important moments are going to happen, but it also means understanding when to step back.
The Eucharist is a good example.
It is a moment that needs to be photographed, but it needs to be photographed discreetly and reverently.
That combination is important throughout a Catholic wedding Mass.
