Ten Questions to Ask a Wedding Photographer Before You Book For Catholic Couples

Booking a wedding photographer is a big decision. Here are the ten questions I'd ask if I were a Catholic couple doing their research.

1. Have you photographed a nuptial Mass before?

Start here. Not just a church wedding but a full nuptial Mass. The structure is specific, the moments are specific, and experience matters.

2. Can I see a full gallery from a church wedding?

Not highlights. A full gallery. You want to see how the ceremony section is covered, how the light is handled, and whether the key liturgical moments are actually there.

3. Do you shoot with flash?

If yes, ask how they handle churches where flash isn't permitted, or where it simply doesn't suit the atmosphere. A good church photographer has a full answer to this.

4. What camera do you shoot on?

Mirrorless cameras are near-silent and handle low light extremely well. Both matter in a church. It's worth knowing.

5. Will you speak with the priest before the mass?

A professional photographer should speak to the priest or parish secretary before the wedding to agree on positioning and any restrictions. If they haven't thought about this, that tells you something.

6. How do you handle the Consecration?

During the Consecration, a photographer should not be moving. Knowing this, and respecting it without having to be told, is a basic marker of experience with Catholic weddings.

7. How many photos will we receive?

Church ceremonies take time and produce a lot of moments worth capturing. Make sure the number of images you're promised reflects that.

8. How long after the wedding will we receive our gallery?

Standard is four to ten weeks. Know what you're agreeing to upfront.

9. Do you have backup equipment?

Camera failures happen. A professional photographer always has a backup body and backup lenses. Ask directly.

10. What do you love about photographing church weddings?

This one isn't about logistics. It's about finding out whether they actually care. A photographer who lights up talking about the light through stained glass, or the quiet of the vows, or the recessional, that's a photographer who will show up fully on your day.

I'd be happy to answer all ten of these. If you'd like to ask them, just get in touch.
