The Difference Between a Church Wedding Photographer and a Wedding Photographer Who Has Shot in a Church

This sounds like the same thing. It isn't.

It comes down to experience, not just exposure

Most wedding photographers in the UK have photographed at least one or two church ceremonies. That doesn't make them church wedding photographers in any meaningful sense.

A church wedding photographer, someone who has spent years working inside Catholic and Christian churches has built up a kind of knowledge that only comes from repetition. They know how the light changes through a service depending on the time of day and the direction the church faces. They know which moments in the liturgy require stillness and which allow for movement. They know how to read a priest's preferences quickly and work within them without asking five questions in the vestibule before the ceremony begins.

The gear matters too

Low light is the defining challenge of church photography. Stained glass creates contrast. Candles create warmth but not much illumination. Flash is often restricted or simply wrong for the atmosphere.

A photographer who shoots churches regularly will have built their kit around this. A fast lens. A mirrorless body that handles high ISO without falling apart. No dependence on flash. These are not minor technical details they're the difference between photographs that look like your wedding and photographs that look like a dimly lit room full of blurry people.

They know what they're walking into

A church is not a blank canvas. It has rules that are written and unwritten. Some priests are relaxed about photography. Others have specific requirements about where you can stand, when you can move, and whether a flash is acceptable. A photographer who has navigated this many times knows how to have that conversation, how to work within whatever constraints exist, and how to do it all without it becoming a source of stress for you.

Ask the direct question

When you're speaking to photographers, just ask: how many Catholic or Christian weddings have you shot? Ask to see the work. The answer (and the portfolio) will tell you everything.

I photograph church weddings across the UK. If you'd like to see my work or talk about yours, I'm always happy to chat.
